i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on getting a private karaoke room in SF Japantown.

It's so hard to find anything through the internet! The only luck I've had is Doremi Music Studio and they quoted me $70 for a room up to 18 people. Does this sound reasonable? Any suggestions out there??

70 bucks? is that for a whole night?
We used to go to do-re-mi in high school. I don't remember how much it was, but it must of been pretty cheap if we could afford it as high schoolers.
I guess though that 70 divided by 18 people wouldn't be that bad.
In high school, you clould have them make a tape of your room for like 5 bucks. We constantly did this in secret, so our friends would be singing really shitty into the microphone, not knowing that their voices would be forever trapped and repeated on our tape players.. Maybe now they do on CD, cuz who even has a tape player anymore?

that is hilarous! 70 bucks per hour by the way. i'm not too stressed about the price, it's more about ensuring that i will get that amount of people together.

oohhh per hour? That would kinda suck if only people show up ($14/hr for karaoke with no booze?) Is having 18 people a requirement for getting the room? Back in high school, we rented the tinyest rooms that had.
Is it for a birthday party? I would recommend just getting a bunch of your friends together, then go to a less busy place on an off night (Sunday thru Thursday) and just take it over.
That's what me and my friends do every week at Lingba Lounge in Potrero Hill. If it weren't for our table(s), like 2 people might be the only ones who would sign up. But Lingba won't work for you, cuz we've already taken it over. Sorry.

well by the time i called do re mi (ok it was the day before), they were completely booked from 9pm-2am, so if you want this place make reservations early!

i found about two others, San Francisco Town Music Studio on Geary & Webster and BC Music Studio on Fillmore. I made reservations at both in case SF Town was nasty but I actually loved it. SF Town only charged $50 an hour (as opposed to doremi at $70 an hr) and while some would consider it divey, I found it to be quite enjoyable. The place has about 10 rooms, the one we got fit about max 15 people with leather couches and puke green walls. The people didn't speak much english but were very accomodating, showing us how the remotes worked and providing us with an ash tray. We brought alcohol in our backpacks despite the handwritten sign on the wall that said "no alcohol -police". Their selection was decent although none of the books were listed by band, so you HAD to know titles. We ended up staying for 3 hrs, mostly engaged in group singing and amazing air guitar. If you're at all shy this is definitely the way to go.
